A police officer testified in the Pademba Road Court No. 2 today in the preliminary investigation of Hawanatu Hawa Koroma, the wife of Nabieu Bangura, who is accused of setting her husband on fire at their Leicester Peak residence in November 2024.
Koroma is charged with the murder of her husband, Nabieu Bangura, on November 22, 2024, at their residence near Leicester Peak Junction, Hill Station, Freetown.
The deceased's younger brother, Saidu Bangura, testified as a prosecution witness. He stated that he received a phone call from Moses Kamara informing him that his brother had sustained severe burn injuries.
Upon arriving at Connaught Hospital, Saidu stated that Nabieu informed him that his wife, Hawanatu, had set him on fire. Saidu testified that the incident occurred after a heated argument following Nabieu's return home from work, during which his wife accused him of infidelity.
Saidu testified that Nabieu attempted to avoid further conflict by sleeping in his shop. However, he alleged that while Nabieu was sleeping, Hawanatu doused him with a flammable liquid and set him alight, subsequently locking the door.
Saidu stated that neighbours rescued Nabieu, forcing entry into the premises and transporting him to the emergency hospital, from where he was transferred to Connaught Hospital for further treatment.
Saidu testified that medical professionals stated that Nabieu had suffered 90% burns and died a week later. He confirmed his presence at the postmortem examination and that photographs of his brother's remains were taken as evidence and submitted to the court.
The unrepresented defendant did not question the witness.
The case has been adjourned to January 28, 2025, with Hawanatu Koroma remaining in custody.
