Sierra Leone to Open 2026 FIFA World Cup Africa Qualifiers campaign against Ethiopia and Egypt

The Leone Stars of Sierra Leone will commence their 2026 FIFA World Cup Africa Qualifying campaign against Ethiopia on 15 November at the Mohamed V Stadium in Casablanca, Morocco.

The team will then host Egypt on 19 November at the Samuel K. Doe Sports Complex in Paynesville, Liberia. Interim coach Amidu Karim is hopeful that his team can make a deep run in the competition.

"We have a talented squad of players who are hungry for success," Karim said. "We know that it will be a difficult challenge, but we are confident that we can compete with the best teams in Africa."

Sierra Leone is currently ranked 122nd in the FIFA World Rankings, but the team has shown signs of improvement in recent years. In 2021, the Leone Stars reached the African Cup of Nations for the first time in 25 years.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be held in the United States, Mexico, and Canada. The top five teams from each of the five CAF groups will advance to the final round of qualifying, where they will compete for five World Cup berths.
