President Maada Bio arrives in Abuja for an urgent ECOWAS meeting on Niger coup

H.E President Julius Maada Bio yestlerday 9th August 2023, arrived in Abuja, the capital city of Nigeria, to participate in an extraordinary meeting of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) heads of states. The urgent meeting has been called to address the escalating political crisis in Niger following a recent coup d'état.


ECOWAS, under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Nigeria, who also serves as the Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government, has convened this meeting with the primary objective to discuss the implications of the recent coup d'état in Niger and strategize on maintaining stability within the region.


H.E Julius Maada Bio is accompanied by ECOWAS Speaker Hon. Tunis and Foreign Affairs Minister Timothy Musa Kabba. This gathering is the second gathering of the ECOWAS Authorities since the coup d’etat in Niger and the meeting will be convened today 10th August 2023.

As the meeting unfolds, leaders are expected to engage in in-depth discussions, analyzing the current situation in Niger and its potential impact on the wider West African region. The outcome of the meeting will likely include a joint statement and a comprehensive plan of action to address the crisis, ensuring the restoration of democratic governance and the well-being of the people of Niger.


President Bio is expected to return to Sierra Leone shortly after this engagement.
