Abdulai Kamara, a 20-year-old motorcyclist, has been sentenced to 12 months in prison for escaping from police custody. The sentence was issued by Magistrate Sahr Kekura at the Pademba Road Court No.1 in Freetown following Kamara's guilty plea.
Kamara was charged with a single count of escaping from police custody, a violation of the law.
According to the police report, on June 1, 2024, at the Congo Cross Police Station in Freetown, Kamara, who was a prisoner awaiting trial, escaped from police custody.
Prior to sentencing, the police prosecutor, Detective Police Constable 17649 Kargbo B, informed the Magistrate that the accused had no prior criminal record.
The accused, who was not represented by legal counsel, pleaded with the Magistrate for leniency. He admitted that he had escaped custody when a police officer sent him to purchase water outside the police cell.
Following the plea for mitigation, Magistrate Kekura sentenced Kamara to 12 months imprisonment at the Male Correctional Facility in Freetown.
