Mohamed Alieu Kamara, a UK-based Scrabble player from Sierra Leone, finished third at the 15th Malta International Scrabble Open (MISO)tournament held in St Julian's, Malta on November 4-6, 2023, an annual event organized by the Malta Scrabble Club that attracts players from across the globe.
Kamara won 16 games and lost nine with a spread of +860, which helped him secure a third-place finish behind the winner, Harshan Lamabadusuriya of England, and Kong Chock Heng of Malaysia, who came second.
Kamara expressed his pride in representing Sierra Leone and flying the green, white, and blue flag at the highest level of world Scrabble. He also said that he was proud to perform at such a high standard and to get his country to this height of an international Scrabble competition.
Forty players from eighteen countries competed in MISO, which featured a multi-talented field of world Scrabble players.
Kamara's achievement is a significant one for Sierra Leone and for African Scrabble. It shows that African players can compete at the highest level of the game and that Sierra Leone is a force to be reckoned with in the world of Scrabble.
