Minister Kanja Sesay lays out plans to increase access to energy & the need for sector efficiency


Sierra Leone's Minister of Energy, Alhaji Kanja Sesay, addressed staff at the Ministry of Energy on September 19, 2023, urging them to be effective and efficient in their work. He emphasized the importance of the energy sector in helping the New Direction administration of President Julius Maada Bio achieve its second term Big Five Agenda, which energy remains intertwined in all.


The Minister of Energy praised the Ministry’s team of professionals and administrators, and called on all staff to work hard to consolidate the impressive gains of the past five years. He also called on staff to remain disciplined and to always act responsibly and maturely in their work.


The Minister of Energy recalled the recent two-day retreat, during which sector players had frank discussions on gains, challenges, plans, and staff efficiency. He concluded by expressing his confidence in the Ministry’s ability to achieve its goals, and thanked staff for their hard work and dedication.


This is the first meeting at work, after conducting a two-day retreat at Sierra Palms on September 11th and 12th, 2023, where he had brought together sector players including the Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority, EDSA, Electricity Generation and Transmission Company, EGTC, Sierra Leone Electricity and Water Regulatory Commission, SLEWRC, Staff of the Ministry of Energy, and Independent Power Producers, IPP.


Delivering his closing address, on the 12th of September, Energy Minister, Alhaji Kanja Sesay, had said he was delighted to be part of the frank deliberations that touched on debt burden, its reduction and financial viability, revenue decline and collection efficiency, tariff rationalization, institutional efficiency, energy loss and infrastructure decay, power trips and blackouts, renewable energy and sustainability, and review of the Electricity Act, adding that the these would serve as the bedrock to ensure the sector is placed on a strong footing and an infallible trajectory to help it deliver on its mandates.



He praised Dr. Kandeh Yumkella who had been in attendance, for his insightful contributions at the retreat and reiterated the commitment of his Ministry to working with the Office of Presidential Initiative on Climate Change, Renewable Energy and Food Security.


Chairman Presidential Initiative on Climate Change, Renewable Energy and Food Security, Dr. Kandeh Kolleh Yumkella, spoke about the crucial importance of renewable energy and the need for collaboration among the various sector players.
