Dr. Brian Conton, a medical professional, has taken legal action following alleged online harassment. The Cyber Security and Crime Act in Sierra Leone criminalizes various online behaviors, yet public awareness of these laws remains limited. Perpetrators risk arrest, substantial fines, and imprisonment for engaging in cyberbullying or cyberstalking.
On the 29th of June 2024, Dura Sapateh Fornah, a former employee of King Harman Road Hospital, allegedly used a WhatsApp account to post defamatory messages targeting Dr. Conton. Fornah faces charges of cyberbullying and cyberstalking at the Pademba Road Magistrate Court No. 1 in Freetown.
During the court proceedings, Dr. Conton testified that he received disparaging messages intended to damage his reputation. He expressed feeling threatened and in fear for his safety, particularly as the accused allegedly incited violence against him in public places. Dr. Conton submitted his iPhone 13, containing the offensive messages, to the Cyber Crime Unit of the Sierra Leone Police.
Following Dr. Conton's testimony, defense counsel C. Williams requested an adjournment for cross-examination. Magistrate Kekura scheduled the cross-examination for the 8th of October 2024.
The accused is currently on bail.
