Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr recently participated in a two-day panel discussion in Senegal focused on democratization processes in West Africa. This event, organized by Wilton Park, the UK government's expert in convening international policy dialogue, was centered on State-Citizen Engagement to support Democratization Processes in West Africa.
The dialogue gathered senior representatives from various international and regional organizations, including ECOWAS, UNOWAS, AU, NDI, OSF, FCDO, Chatham House, the US State Department, Afrobarometer, and several West African election-focused CSOs. The discussions highlighted a range of electoral experiences in the West African sub-region, the pivotal role of ECOWAS before and after elections, factors contributing to military coups, and recommendations for strengthening democracy by enhancing citizen agency.
Mayor Aki-Sawyerr emphasized the widespread support for and commitment to fostering a strengthened democracy that ensures social, economic, and cultural rights for the West African people. She committed to collaborating with the Tripartite Recommendations Implementation Committee, the APC Leadership, and other stakeholders to ensure the comprehensive and appropriate implementation of electoral reforms and other recommendations.
