Zimbabwe's Minister of Sports, Recreation, Arts, and Culture, Kirsty Coventry, has announced her candidacy for the presidency of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). As a former Olympic champion and the only woman among the six candidates running for the position, her bid is groundbreaking.
For over 130 years, no African or woman has contested for the presidency of the IOC. Coventry will be the first woman to run for IOC president since Anita DeFrantz's bid in 2001.
Coventry, Zimbabwe's most decorated Olympian, has already made her mark in sports history. With the election approaching on March 20, 2025, following the exit of current IOC President Thomas Bach, Coventry’s campaign is seen as a significant step forward for both women and Africa in the global sporting arena.
