A local mason, Samuel Kamara, 42, was sentenced to 36 months in prison after being convicted of iron rod theft. The sentence aims to deter similar criminal activity in Sierra Leone's struggling construction industry.

Kamara appeared before Magistrate Mamakoh Saio Kallon at the Pademba Road Magistrate Court No. 5 in Freetown, facing one count of fraudulent conversion, contrary to Section 20 (1) (iv) (a) of the Larceny Act 1916.

The accused pleaded guilty after the charges were read and explained to him in open court.

According to the police report, between April 1 and April 30, 2024, at Cain Stick Gloucester, in the Mountain Rural District, Western Area in Freetown, Kamara fraudulently converted ten full-length half-inch iron rods, valued at SLE 1,850, entrusted to him by Osman Koroma for safekeeping, to his own use or benefit.

After Kamara pleaded guilty, Prosecutor Sergeant 9906 Umu Jalloh informed the Magistrate that there were no previous criminal records against the accused.

The accused, who was not represented by a lawyer, pleaded with the Bench for leniency.

Following his plea in mitigation, Magistrate Kallon sentenced him to 36 months in the Male Correctional Facility in Freetown.
