Grants and Support for Innovative Solutions: Youth-Led Climate Initiatives in Freetown

The Freetown City Council, in collaboration with Bloomberg Philanthropies and United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG), under the auspices of the Bloomberg Youth Climate Action Fund, has allocated grants to eighteen youth-led organizations actively addressing the climate crisis. Recipients, aged between fifteen and twenty-four years, were selected through a rigorous proposal process.

These organizations will be awarded micro-grants, ranging from $1,000 to $5,000, to facilitate the implementation of their innovative climate solutions over a six-month duration.

The funded projects encompass initiatives such as waste-to-energy conversion, community-based mangrove rehabilitation, and public awareness campaigns designed to educate on climate change issues.

The Freetown City Council will provide oversight, technical assistance, and advisory support throughout the project implementation phase.

Mayor Aki-Sawyerr conveyed her strong endorsement of the youth's innovative approaches and dedication, and anticipates observing the constructive outcomes of their endeavors within the community.
