Foday Fofanah wins maiden edition of Scrabble Tourney



Foday Fofanah has won the first edition of Scrabble tourney held by the National Scrabble association, in partnership with Rokel Commercial Bank on 19th August 2023 at the Freetown amusement Park. Fofanah contested against one time national champion Ibrahim Sesay.


This tourney, though a championship in itself, is not to be confused with the Grand National Championship organized by the association annually in January.


The popularity of the word game Scrabble, is growing among Sierra Leonean youths in the country, which is why esteemed figures in Sierra Leone have emphasized the importance of promoting Scrabble, believing that the game can significantly boost academic performance anong other numerous benefits.




Ekundayo Walton Gilpin, the Managing Director of Rokel Commercial Bank, recently stressed the need for Sierra Leoneans to prioritize Scrabble games. He highlighted the game's potential to enhance academic performance and stressed the many advantages associated with it.


Christian Asgill, the President of the National Scrabble Association, echoed Gilpin's sentiments and emphasized the importance of engaging young minds in Scrabble. Asgill assured that the association is diligently working to raise awareness of the game across the country.


Scrabble is a game that transcends gender barriers, allowing everyone to participate and excel. Safiatu Jalloh, a passionate young female competitor, expressed her overwhelming joy as a participant in a recent Scrabble competition.


This year's competition with the theme, "Bringing Scrabble to every Sierra Leonean," attracted twenty participants from various regions.


With efforts underway to raise awareness and engage young people, it is only a matter of time before Scrabble becomes a household name and an educational tool for the nation's youth.
