Education for All Coalition & Plan International Train Teachers on Gender Equality and Mentorship

On Tuesday, October 17th, 2023, Education for All Coalition Sierra Leone, in collaboration with Plan International, organized a comprehensive two-day training session for thirty-one teachers from various locations across the country. The training focused on equipping teachers to serve as role models, counselors, and mentors, and took place at the FAWE Office on Hill Street.

Education for All Coalition Sierra Leone is a well-established civil society organization that advocates for gender equality in the country's education system. In operation since 2018, this project has been successfully implemented in several African countries, including Sierra Leone, Togo, Nigeria, Morocco, Burkina Faso, and Sudan.

Augustine M Kembo, the Head of Finance Admin and Operations, shed more light on the project during the training sessions. He emphasized the vital importance of mentorship, coaching, and the positive impact that teachers can have as role models in shaping the lives of their students.

During the first day of training, Ann Marie Konneh, the Deputy Director of the Gender Unit at the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary School Education, conveyed a key message to the attending teachers. Madam Konneh highlighted various challenges and issues faced by girls in the country, emphasizing the significance of addressing these concerns through effective gender equality initiatives.

Aminata Phoray Musa, the Head of Program and Quality Development at Plan International, shared her thoughts on the misconceptions surrounding gender equality, particularly in relation to women and girls in Sierra Leone. She underscored the pressing need for comprehensive understanding and support to ensure equal opportunities for all.

The training sessions provide a valuable platform for teachers to enhance their skills and knowledge in promoting gender equality, mentorship, and positive role modeling. As these teachers return to their classrooms, their newfound expertise will undoubtedly have a profound impact on the education system, empowering students to overcome societal barriers and achieve their full potential.
