In a significant development, the President of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission, His Excellency Omar Alieu Touray, has initiated a Joint Assessment Mission, comprising representatives from the African Union (AU) and the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS) to the Republic of Sierra Leone.
The mission's objective is to assess the progress made in implementing the Agreement for National Unity signed between the Government of Sierra Leone and the All Peoples Congress (APC) party on October 18, 2023.
Co-led by His Excellency Leonardo Santos Simão of UNOWAS and Her Excellency Fatoumata Jallow-Tambajang, former Vice President of The Gambia, the assessment team will engage with senior government officials, the leadership of the APC, and other political entities in Sierra Leone.
Their agenda also includes discussions with relevant stakeholders such as Security Agencies and the Tripartite Committee to evaluate the progress achieved in implementing the National Unity Agreement. A scheduled meeting with the President of Sierra Leone, His Excellency Maada Bio, is also on the mission's itinerary.
As Moral Guarantors of the Agreement, the Joint ECOWAS-AU-UNOWAS Mission emphasizes the importance of maintaining peace, unity, and stability in Sierra Leone. They call upon all political actors and citizens to prioritize the nation's well-being over individual or party interests, urging for collective calmness and cooperation during this critical phase of evaluation and dialogue.
