The Independent Commission for Peace and National Cohesion has communicated set dates for the proposed peace mediation between government and opposition, the All People’s Congress party.
Following electioneering activities of June 24th 2023, the All People’s Congress party had informed the public of their decision to abstain from participation in any governance related activity, including the swearing in and sitting in Parliament, Council and their very opposition role of holding government accountable.
Despite prior efforts to mediate on the issue, their resolve had remained in place, on conditions of reelection, full disclosure of disaggregated data published by Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone and the mediation to be conducted by independent foreign bodies. The last condition being as a result of their distrust in the autonomy and independence of local institutions.
On 6th October, the Independent Commission for Peace and National Cohesion who have been at the helm of mediation efforts, announced the upcoming arrival of Commonwealth, AU, ECOWAS during the week of 8th October, to facilitate these talks.
According to the board chair of ICPNC, Rev. Shodankeh Johnson, the talks are to be held between the Sierra Leone Government and APC in Freetown, Oct. 16-18, at the Bintumani hotel.
